When spooky season is your favourite time of year

Do I love this time of year? Absolutely.
Someone once told me that autumn is the best season to shop for home decor—especially if your heart leans toward the dark and the spooky. That describes me to a tee. The air turns crisp, the veil thins, and everything feels just a little more magical.

This week has been a whirlwind of creativity and quiet joy. I’ve made:

  • A new picture for the website
  • A personal piece just for me
  • A dark blue marigold—just because

And of course, I’ve been planning this year’s decorations for the big night itself. As a Wiccan, this season holds deep meaning. We celebrate All Hallows’ Eve and Samhain, marking the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. It’s the witches’ new year—a time to honour our ancestors and loved ones who’ve crossed into the other realm. It’s sacred, reflective, and beautifully bittersweet

One of my favourite makes this week is an illuminated shadowbox featuring a witch and her black cat. She may need a nose (poor thing!), but I still adore her. The celestial background, scattered with cut stars, lets the light shine through in the most enchanting way. It casts a soft glow across the room—like moonlight caught in paper.

This piece is about to go live on the website. It’s a collage of black petals and a swarm of bats heading out for the night. The background is a deep navy blue, speckled with gold stars that highlight the moon’s brightness and contrast beautifully with the dark florals. It feels like a nocturnal bloom—mysterious and elegant.

The last make of the week (so far!) is a 3D marigold crafted from dark blue and gold paper. I’ve finally mastered the technique, and I think this design will become a regular in future pieces. It does look a little like a cupcake—but in the most charming way.

That’s it for this week’s musings from the studio. Whether you’re carving pumpkins, casting spells, or simply curling up with a cup of something warm, I hope your Halloween is safe, soulful, and just a little bit enchanted.
I hope your week is filled with glowing windows, rustling leaves, and moments that make your heart flicker like candlelight.
With love and shadows,

Annette
